About Us
Passionate creators dedicated to bringing compelling narratives to life.

Founded by Mexican filmmaker Luis Quijano, Balché is a film production company. Inspired by the Mayan drink and tree from which the drink comes from, Balché is focused on telling  profound and impactful narratives in genre filmmaking, mostly horror and fantasy, that showcase the complexities of human nature.

Balché runs away from bland and plastic styles, instead focusing on stories out of the ordinary, open to explore non-traditional dimensions, and exposing the good, the bad, the hopeful and the bleak of the world.

Our Founder, Luis Quijano.

Luis Quijano is a Mexican filmmaker born in Mérida, Yucatán, currently based in Los Angeles. Since 2015, he has produced, written and directed narrative films, music videos and commercials both in Mexico and in the United States.

His directorial work commonly explores themes of fear, belief and social norms in culturally driven stories led by Latin-American characters within the horror genre and founding Balché Films is his way of continuing to tell these stories in a high profile manner.

“We know the thrills and joys that a film can give its audience and we respect the viewer’s time, money and effort. Whether it’s a film, a music video or a commercial, whether it’s a horror, a drama, a comedy, we hope to bring audiences around the world an unforgettable experience.”

Our Workflow Process

Our Workflow Process
1. Development

While it may take months or even years for a project to leave this stage, from fleshing out ideas, to writing the first drafts, figuring out upcoming logistics of the production, to funding, we take great care of this stage of the production and wholeheartedly enjoy it. In our eyes, the screenwriter of the project is the leader of this stage.

2. Pre-Production

With funding and a greenlight secured, the producer and director begin preparing for filming: cast and crew is hired, the budget is finalized, script is locked, equipment is secured, insurances are locked, locations are scouted, the shooting schedule is set, among other tasks. By the end of this stage, the producer and director are ready to shoot and have everything they need for a smooth, and enjoyable shoot.

Our Workflow Process
3. Production

The fun part. Where magic happens. The film is produced and shot. All the work put in development and pre production reflects itself at this stage. We give full creative control and trust to the director but we also believe in the power of collaboration and safe communication. No matter how low or high the budget is, or how big or small the crew is, the film gets made with the resources available always with the aim for it to connect with audiences around the world.

4. Post-Production

The last stage of the creation of the film. Once the film is shot (or while it’s being shot), the footage is sent over to the editor. In this process, the footage is assembled to create a finished, completed cut of the film with sound, music, songs, and all sound effects, ready for release. Every project has a unique post time and we stand by the fact that this stage can’t be rushed and that this is a key stage for the film to have a long life after release.
